The UM Decision Households Face

You're structuring coverage for two or more vehicles in Mississippi. Your carrier quoted you with uninsured motorist coverage included on every car. You know Mississippi doesn't mandate UM, but you're not sure whether you can drop it from some vehicles and keep it on others, or whether rejecting it once removes it from your entire policy.

Mississippi law allows you to reject uninsured motorist coverage, but only in writing. Most carriers include UM automatically unless you sign a rejection form. That form applies to your entire policy: you cannot reject UM on one vehicle and keep it on another when both sit on the same policy. The decision is policy-wide, not per-vehicle.

Rejecting UM removes it from every vehicle on your policy—you cannot keep it on one car and drop it from another.

Mississippi Uninsured Driver Rate

28.2%

More than one in four Mississippi drivers carries no liability insurance. When an uninsured driver hits your vehicle, your own uninsured motorist coverage pays your medical bills and vehicle damage if you carry it; without UM, you absorb the loss or pursue the at-fault driver directly.

What Uninsured Motorist Coverage Actually Pays

Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage pays your medical expenses, lost wages, and pain-and-suffering damages when an uninsured or hit-and-run driver injures you or your passengers. It covers every person in your vehicle up to your policy's per-person and per-accident limits. Uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) pays to repair or replace your vehicle when an uninsured driver damages it and you can identify the at-fault driver.

UM coverage follows your policy, not individual vehicles. When you carry UM on a multi-car policy, every vehicle on that policy receives the same UM protection. If you reject UM, every vehicle loses it. Mississippi does not permit split UM elections within a single policy.

UM limits typically mirror your liability limits. If you carry Mississippi's minimum liability ($25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage), your UM limits will match unless you purchase higher UM limits separately. Higher UM limits cost more but protect you better when an uninsured driver causes serious injury or totals a newer vehicle.

Rejecting UM in writing removes it from every vehicle on your policy. You cannot keep UM on your daily driver and drop it from a rarely-driven second car when both share one policy.

How the Written Rejection Works

Mississippi statute requires carriers to offer uninsured motorist coverage on every auto policy. You can decline it, but only by signing a rejection form your carrier provides.

The rejection form names the coverage you're declining and confirms you understand what you're giving up. Most carriers present the form at the time you bind the policy or at renewal. Once you sign, UM coverage disappears from your policy declarations page and your premium drops. The rejection stays in effect until you request UM coverage again in writing.

If you never signed a rejection form, your policy carries UM automatically. Check your declarations page: uninsured motorist bodily injury and uninsured motorist property damage will appear as separate line items with their own limits. If those lines are missing and you don't recall signing a rejection, contact your carrier to confirm your coverage status and request UM if you want it added.

When UM Makes Sense for Multi-Car Households

Households insuring multiple vehicles face higher cumulative exposure to uninsured drivers. Each vehicle on the road represents another opportunity for an uninsured motorist collision. UM coverage protects every car on your policy without requiring separate elections or higher per-vehicle premiums.

UM becomes more valuable when your household includes newer vehicles worth more than Mississippi's $25,000 property damage minimum, or when household members commute in high-traffic areas where uninsured driver rates run higher. A single uninsured motorist collision can total a vehicle or generate medical bills that exceed the at-fault driver's ability to pay. UM coverage fills that gap.

Rejecting UM makes sense when your household carries collision and medical payments coverage that already cover the same losses, or when every vehicle is older and you're comfortable absorbing a total loss. Collision pays regardless of fault; UM pays only when an uninsured driver is at fault and you can prove it. If you reject UM, collision and MedPay become your only protection against uninsured drivers.

Mississippi Minimum Liability Limits

$25,000 / $50,000 / $25,000

Mississippi requires $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. Your UM limits typically match your liability limits unless you purchase higher UM coverage separately. Higher UM limits protect you better when an uninsured driver causes serious damage.

Adding or Removing UM Mid-Policy

You can add uninsured motorist coverage to your policy at any time by contacting your carrier and requesting it in writing. The carrier will re-rate your policy to reflect the added coverage, and UM protection begins immediately for every vehicle on the policy. You cannot add UM to only one vehicle: the coverage applies policy-wide or not at all.

Removing UM mid-term requires signing a rejection form. The carrier processes the rejection, removes UM from your declarations, and adjusts your premium downward. The rejection takes effect on the date you sign, not retroactively. If a claim occurs before you sign the rejection, UM coverage still applies.

Compare Carriers That Write Multi-Car Policies in Mississippi

UM pricing varies by carrier. Some carriers charge a flat UM premium per policy; others charge per vehicle. When you're insuring multiple cars, per-policy UM pricing saves money compared to per-vehicle pricing. Compare quotes from carriers writing Mississippi multi-car policies to see which structure fits your household better. State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, and Farmers all write multi-vehicle policies in Mississippi and offer uninsured motorist coverage as an option.

Request quotes with UM included and with UM rejected. The difference shows you exactly what you're paying for the protection. If the UM premium is small relative to your household's total exposure, keeping it across all vehicles usually makes sense. If the premium is large and your household already carries collision and MedPay, rejecting UM may be the better financial decision. Compare the numbers before you decide.
